YZU ground brings back the culture of rice-drying and rake

YZU hold an event called “Egret Home” to reconstruct traditional rice-drying ground, in which each guest took rake to arrange grain. The guests included: Ja-Jun Chen as director general of department of Youth Affairs of Taoyuan; Xu-dong Deng as Board Director of Zhu Xiao Community Development Association; Ya-hui Lee as coordinator of social studies in Yung-Feng High School and Jia-Chi Liang as director of Yuan Ze University College of General Studies.

After grain harvesting, Liang said, the grains must be raked apart for drying but now most people use machine to dry rice. The skill of grain drying is disappearing. Nowadays, young people neither see the rake nor understand the meaning. There were almost 90 young students from different places participated this event and learned how to dry rice in the YZU ground in which they have to rake a pile of grain into a line and then turn it six times.
